Psychology Department

School psychologists help students succeed academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. School psychologists receive extensive training in education and psychology. They hold a Master’s degree, Educational Specialist degree, or a Doctorate and are licensed by the state of Ohio to practice in schools. Graduate school coursework includes the study of child development, mental health, student learning, academic and behavioral assessment and intervention, curriculum and instruction, consultation, and school law and ethics. More information on school psychology can be obtained from the National Association of School Psychologists’ website at www.nasponline.org.

The Clermont County Educational Service Center (CCESC) currently employs 13 school psychologists, as well as 1 psychology assistant and up to 10 intern school psychologists. The CCESC school psychologists provide services to the following school districts: Batavia, West Clermont, Felicity-Franklin, New Richmond, Bethel, Goshen, Williamsburg, and Clermont Northeastern. Services provided are both direct and consultative for preschoolers through high school students. Direct services include academic and behavioral assessment to determine strengths and areas of concern, intervention implementation to improve those areas of concern, and evaluations for special education services. Consultative services include helping teachers to develop and implement strategies that improve student learning and serving on leadership teams that work to improve student learning. A typical day might involve participating on a school leadership team to develop better reading interventions for struggling students, meeting with a student for counseling, participating in a student meeting with a parent and teacher to discuss learning concerns and develop strategies to help the student, completing academic assessment with a student, and observing in a classroom.

School psychologists are great assets to schools because of their unique knowledge and skills in:

  • Assessment data analysis for individual students and for entire schools
  • Scientifically-based instruction and intervention in reading, math, writing, and behavior
  • Special education eligibility and services
  • Consultation methods
  • Program development and evaluation
  • Systems-level change in schools
  • Response to Intervention
